B - R - E - S  LOVES THE SEAHAWKS ... Go! Go!

That’s the cheer heard through the corridors of Boothbay Region High School by the students in grades K-8 and their teachers at Boothbay Region Elementary School (BRES) on Friday, Feb. 26. The kids were showing their support for the Boothbay Region High School (BRHS) Lady Seahawks basketball team the day before the state championship game in Augusta.

Why?  Because this girls basketball team is the first to win the regional championship game and be state championship bound in 32 years!

Some of the students were dressed in blue and gold, others wore “Future Seahawks” T-shirts or BRHS Seahawks T-shirts.

Many carried signs reading “Go Seahawks!” or the words to the cheer.

There were actual instruments, like a big bass drum, and improv instruments - including a large wastebasket drum!

The kids entered from the north door, came down the hall toward the lobby, turned right and through the library, and upstairs before returning to the elementary school.

Comments that could be overheard in the halls from students and teachers were “Wow!” “Awesome!” and “Well, this is really something!”

But, it was the smiles and laughter exchanged between the students of both schools that said it all.

The idea for the parade evolved on Feb. 24. Due to weather concerns, a 2-hour delay became a no school day. Many of the teachers and administrators were at the school.

“We were talking about having had to cancel the annual winter carnival on the 12th because it was so cold outside,” BRES Assistant Principal Trish Campbell said.

“We thought, wouldn’t it be great to do something else? Conversation turned to the game coming up on Saturday and how great it would be if the kids could do something to show their support.  Someone suggested a parade - and that was that. The kids were very excited this morning. It’s an exciting time - for all of us!”

Yep. It’s one exciting time - in one amazing community.
