Two years ago Southport voters approved Oliver’s restaurant in Cozy Harbor the right to serve beer and wine. The issue was contentious, however, the article passed at town meeting, 59-29.

This year, voters will decide whether to extend Oliver’s permit to allow the sales of liquor, in addition to beer and wine.

A public hearing will start at 6 p.m. Feb. 11, at the Southport Town Office to discuss this year’s warrant articles, including Oliver’s liquor license.

According to Selectman Smith Climo, there is a back story regarding Oliver’s liquor license.

Climo said in the spring of 2014, Oliver’s management renewed their permit with the town, however, a box was checked on the application that would enable the restaurant to serve spirituous liquors.

Upon realizing the mistake, the selectmen approached the staff of Oliver’s and explained that the discrepancy would not allow the restaurant to sell liquor in addition to wine and beer, because it would violate the town ordinances.

The restaurant obliged, but subsequently filed to amend the town ordinances to allow liquor sales.

The Southport selectmen said they anticipate a busy night at Wednesday’s public hearing.

Climo said the opposition stems mainly from public concern of a restaurant selling hard alcohol so close to the Southport Yacht Club. The yacht club is a busy sailing center for youth recreation in the summer.

All townspeople are invited to partake in the public hearing, where other warrant items will be up for discussion.
