Boothbay Sea and Science Center is ‘Jazzing Up Summer’

    What do you get when you mix together a historic Boothbay Harbor shipyard, four nationally acclaimed jazz musicians from New York City, “jazzy” guests, and generous supporters and sponsors? You get the Boothbay Sea and Science Center’s only major 2018 fundraising event Jazzing Up Summer with the Marcus & Riza Printup Quartet.

    On Saturday, Aug. 11, The Shipyard in Boothbay Harbor (formerly the Boothbay Harbor Shipyard) will play host to a special night of unique jazz music featuring one of New York’s best jazz trumpeters, Marcus Printup of Jazz at Lincoln Center, his wife Riza Printup on the jazz harp, Kevin Smith on bass, and Henry Conerway III on drums.

    Marcus Printup, born and raised in Conyers, Georgia  has performed and/or recorded with the greatest among them being; Betty Carter, Dianne Reeves, Eric Reed, Cyrus Chestnut, Wycliffe Gordon, Marcus Roberts. In 1991, Mr. Printup’s met his mentor and friend-to-be, the incomparable pianist Marcus Roberts. An introduction to world renowned trumpeter, Wynton Marsalis, led to the invitation to the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra in 1993. Marcus has numerous records that include but are not limited to; “Song for the Beautiful Woman,” Unveiled,” “Hub Songs,” “A Time for Love” and his latest, “Homage.” 

    Riza Printup began her undergraduate studies as a classical harpist at the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana under the instruction of Susan McDonald. She’s performed Saint-Saens classic ‘Le Cygn’ (for harp and cello) with virtuoso cellist Yo-Yo Ma and jookin dance master Lil Buck. Ms. Printup recently accompanied Lady Gaga onstage for the Elton John – I’m Still Standing (a Grammy salute) that aired on national television on April 10, 2018.

    The Boothbay Sea and Science Center’s Jazz Concert Committee are working diligently to make this a most unforgettable evening. The Committee includes: Deezie Flower, Penny Pollard, Kate Horgan, Joanna Breen, Hillary Friedman, Kristen Gray, Michael Pollard and Pauline Dion.
