The Boothbay Region Special Olympics soccer team traveled to Husson University in Bangor for the Central Maine Soccer Tourney and Skills Competition Oct. 15.

Boothbay’s adult team lost twice to Downeast Horizons with scores of 3-0. The upshot was in the last game when Danny Miller famously stopped 11 out of 14 shots on goal.

“Matt Farnham put up great defense as Valerie Giles filled in for one of the adult athletes who came down sick,” said Coach Toby LeConte. “Valerie played in the offense line with Joey Ranco and Ronda LeConte all of whom took 21 overall shots on goal.”

The forwards used amazing passing and foot work, but came up short in a final loss to Momentum North, 2-0, said LeConte adding that despite the score Danny Miller stopped 18 out of 20 shots on goal and the adults came away in 4th place.

The Boothbay students team faced a double elimination from Oceanside in the finals. Zander Blake, much like Danny, stopped all but five shots on goal and Boothbay brought home the silver, said LeConte. Defensive players were John “Piper’s Son” Rankin, Vincent Giles, Coyle Lawler, Anthony Angelico and Lucian Stoddard “the mighty,” as LeConte calls him. Offense was lead by Issac Pray, Amber Hyson and Grace Giles.

Skills athletes were Izabelle Hamlin and Jameson Brooks who both placed 4th in their categories. Blake Chadwick and Cole Walby earned gold medals; Brently Maxcy won silver; and Raiden Hutchins, bronze.

Said LeConte, “It was the first soccer skills contest for all but Blake. I am so proud of the teamwork and skill work used during the tournament.”
