On Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the Society will host a three-course lunch with award-winning Maine food historian Sandy Oliver, author of “Saltwater Foodways.” Guests will gather in the private “Whiskey Room” at Mine Oyster Restaurant, Pier One, overlooking the harbor. As the luncheon door prize, Sandy will offer an autographed copy of “Saltwater Foodways Companion,” featuring authentic nineteenth-century maritime recipes adapted from the history book, “Saltwater Foodways.”

Sandy will describe food on New England fishing vessels and deepwater voyagers from the maritime section of her book which features two main chapters, "Food on Deepwater Vessels" and "Food on Fishing Vessels." These chapters cover the differences in the meals on long-haul journeys and local fishing trips. You might ask, how was the food preserved and prepared? Which foods were the crew’s favorite? Which recipes are still popular today?

Sandy’s charismatic sense of humor, insights, and personal connection with her subjects and her audiences have made her a popular speaker at historical and culinary events throughout the United States.
