Boothbay Middle School Math Team heads to state competition

Boothbay Region’s Middle School Math Club walked away January 25 from the Alpha Chapter Regional Math Competition with a trophy and a chance to compete in the upcoming state meet which will be held sometime in March.
Boothbay’s 4-member official school team (eighth graders Rick Hilscher and Max Hoecker, seventh grader Loren Genrich, and sixth grader Will Perkins) came in fourth place earning them a spot at the state meet later this spring.
The competition average team score was 12.1 and Boothbay earned 22.25 points. Only the top four teams at last Saturday’s meet continue on to states. Rick Hilscher ranked seventh in the top ten individual scorers at the competition which meant he qualified for the state meet on his own and was part of a grueling countdown round at the end of the meet.
Seventh grader Bayly Gaughan-Carrusco, and sixth graders Nick Morley, Ciara Pitcher, Ellie Hilscher competed as individuals at the meet, working to solve a tough array of problems.
A 30-question sprint round (no calculators allowed) was followed by an 8-question target round (two questions handed out every 6 minutes), and a 10-question team round (where collaboration was encouraged).
Finally there was a countdown round for the top 10 scorers at the meet; two students facing off with 45 seconds to solve a problem, buzz in, and give their answer in front of a crowded auditorium. The team is coached by Rita Arnold, teacher at Boothbay Region Elementary School, and Desiree Scorcia, teacher at Boothbay Region High School.
