Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library welcomed community members of all ages for its second annual town-wide scavenger hunt July 25. The event transformed downtown Boothbay into an hour-long adventure as teams worked together to solve clues, answer questions and complete challenges while exploring businesses and landmarks.

“It’s just a nice way for people to get out and showcase the library in the center of our town,” event organizer Jen Betts said before the event.

Beginning at the library, participants received a list of clues and set off through downtown. They searched for hidden items, solved riddles and answered questions that encouraged them to pay close attention to the town’s businesses and historic locations. The event also highlighted the many businesses that sponsor the library’s Summer Reading Program, giving participants a chance to interact with the businesses that help support library programs throughout the year.

Betts and a team of volunteers spent weeks brainstorming ideas, designing clues, mapping the route and creating activities that would be both fun and engaging.

“We spent quite a few hours brainstorming and wandering through town trying to think of things we could incorporate,” Betts said.

This year’s scavenger hunt drew 11 teams, each hoping to claim the championship trophy. The Harbor Hurricanes successfully defended their title. The Flying Beagles finished a close second. The Harbor Hurricanes took home a championship trophy, Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library T-shirts and year-long bragging rights.

Following another successful year, organizers hope the annual event will continue to grow and remain a summertime tradition.
