Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club Junior Sailing and Tennis Program

It’s hard to believe we are wrapping up our third week of the 2019 season. Our sailors and tennis players have gotten to enjoy a bit of every type of weather so far this year. The new Sailing & Education Center and comfortable One Design Room is a huge plus on the rainy or stormy days.

Our third week of the season saw things really get busy. After a great first day on the water, we had great attendance at the ice cream social. Tuesday saw lots of progress being made in classes, both the beginner and intermediate sailors made it all the way out to tumbler, and by Wednesday mornings end they were able to sail around it, although a shifty upwind through the mooring field forced the classes to tow in.

These last couple week have been busy ones for our sailors, as we are heading into a heavy regatta season.

Our Opti Racers crammed in two and a half days of practice before packing up and heading to the Harraseeket Yacht Club youth regatta to enjoy some great conditions, the always popular barge lunch, and some impressive finishes. Arden Carleton finished 2nd in the Opti fleet, with Toby Clarkson in third. Piper Carleton, Hollis Harding and Otto Schoenthal all saw improvement from last year’s finishes and had a bunch of fun. Bobby Clarkson made a cameo appearance in the Opti fleet when his 420 partner could not make it, sailing to some respectable finishes for someone a bit too big, and well out of practice in the Opti. Charley Carleton represented the future of the Opti team by sailing in the green fleet. She had fun, ate too much candy, and asked great questions.

This week, some young Opti sailors headed to Biddeford on Monday for the Pram Invitational – a great first regatta for any young sailor. Wednesday and Thursday, BHYC sailors headed north to the Junior Olympics Sailing Festival hosted by Camden Yacht Club. A healthy group of Opti and 420 sailors are representing themselves and the Club.

Tennis players are finally enjoying some dry days on the clay courts, and spirited inter club matches with Juniper Point. They’re looking forward to the inter club series with Christmas Cove Improvement Association – plans are afoot to get there by boat.

BHYC is especially excited about our collaboration with the Boothbay Region YMCA this summer. Last week, we welcomed 20 Scamper Campers from the YMCA to join our Mini Mariners for a sail around the harbor aboard the Boothbay Harbor One Designs Anna Grace and Fraulein II. Although light wind kept the sails shorter than we would like, we were able to get everyone out on the water in two cycles. Lots of fun was had by all, many thanks to all the One Design owners who have made this possible by donating their time and/or their boats to the cause.
