Boothbay Harbor father, son sell rustic home decor on internet

Boothbay Harbor craftsman Steve Lorrain, 62, has built rustic furniture from reclaimed lumber, building materials and driftwood from along the coast of Maine for the past three decades. His focus has been on providing unique furniture for his friends and relatives, but now he is providing rustic-looking benches, boards, mirrors, picture frames and custom works for a whole new clientele.
Lorrain and his son MIke are selling these items on the internet as part of their new business venture, Two By Sea Designs. Steve Lorrain designs the furniture and Mike Lorrain markets the items to a worldwide audience.
Mike Lorrain, 36, always wanted to operate a business with his parents, Steve and Jen Lorrain. In February, the Lorrain men combined the father’s craftsmanship with the son’s business experience to sell the rustic furniture. Jen Lorrain is the bookkeeper for Two By Sea Designs and his father’s business, Coastal Maintenance.
“He (Steve) has always made stuff, like a picture frame out of an old window sash, on a small scale locally. So we finally decided to make a business out of it,” Mike Lorrain said. “He builds and designs the furniture, and I market it.”
The new business is located at twobyseadesigns.com. Steve Lorrain creates the furniture in Boothbay Harbor. And Mike Lorrain operates the website in Nashville, Tennessee. The company is a part-time venture for both men. Steve Lorrain still operates Coastal Maintenance, and Mike Lorrain works in sales and marketing for Sysco Foods.
The Lorrains are working to get their products noticed on social media. The marketing strategy is to use Pinterest in attracting customers looking for specialty furniture. Pinterest is a social network that allows users to visually share and discover new interests by posting or “pinning” images and videos to their own or other boards.
The Lorrains are using social media to create a market for their uniquely designed rustic furniture. Customers either shop online for what the Lorrains already have in their inventory or they can request special orders. Customers who find ideas on social media websites such as Pinterest or Facebook contact Mike Lorrain, who forwards the request to his father.
“We’re trying to latch onto the Pinterest culture of sharing things on social media. It’s a vast audience which will increase our brand awareness in a short time,” Mike Lorrain said. “Pinterest is centered on sharing ideas on finding everything from fashion to home decor designs and we’re hoping to spark that interest in e-commerce to increase our sales.”
Mike Lorrain named the company after his parents, who both live by the sea.
“We also spoke about having our own business someday and I have these two great parents who live by the ocean. So the name is really a tribute to them,” he said.
The company’s phone number is 615-225-7294.
