Boothbay Harbor Commodore’s Cup Race day 2 in the outer harbor part of the ‘Summer of Sail 2020’

Mon, 07/13/2020 - 11:45am

Race day 2 for the Commodore Cup series was postponed to Sunday due to Saturday rain. Sunday however was a blustery day with white caps in the outer harbor and a steady strong wind from the south. Several of the Boothbay Harbor One Designs are older boats and needed to scratch due to the high winds, but the young sailors racing Anna Grace and Bittersweet were ready for the challenge. Toby Clarkson, Arden Carelton, Cyrus Blake, Holden Langenhagen and Kate Mason took Bittersweet to three wins over siblings Bobby Clarkson and Piper Carlton with Theo Crocetti in Anna Grace. Most of these sailors are on the fall and spring high school sailing team that races smaller 420 class at BHYC, and they were clearly having fun in these older classic keel boats.

BHYC Instructor Payton Thompson was the Sunday Race Committee.

Sunday results for the BHOD class were: 1st place Bittersweet; 2nd Anna Grace

The results for this year Commodore Cup Series in the BHOD class were: 1st place Bittersweet; 2nd Anna Grace tied; 3rd place Charisma; 4th place C-Fever; 5th place Swan; 6th place Osprey

The Cruising class boats included a match race. Zephyr was skippered by Ken Culbert and Sapphire was skippered by Lee Corbin. Sails were reefed for the first race and Zephyr won. In the second race both boats unreefed their sails and Sapphire won. The results for day two was a tie for first place.

The results for the two-day racing series were: Racing class — 1st place Ghost; Cruising Class — 1st place Sapphire, 2nd Zephyr

The next event in the “Summer of Sail” is the ‘Round Southport Race, on Sunday July 19. It includes an annual rivalry with the Southport Yacht Club with the prize of holding “a trash can” going to the best team. Southport is the current holder of the trash can. Last year several public boats joined, and we again encourage all who can participate join the fun. The start will be at 11 a.m. just outside Tumbler Island. The course is to sail around Southport Island to a finish line in Ebenecook Harbor. As previously mentioned, please register early via the link bellow, as we need to organize a timed start, based on the speed of your boat. We also ask races to download racing instructions.
