Betsy Norton returns to Burnt Island
Betsy Norton, wife of Keeper Thomas Norton, was on Burnt Island for the week of August 14 as part of the “Return of the Keeper” series. She put together an album of photos that represented their lives as lighthouse keepers from 1969-71, and was able to share that album and memories with several hundred visitors that week.
When Betsy received the invitation to return to Burnt Island, she burst into tears because it is at the top of her list of "most favorite places on Earth." In addition, it was an opportunity for her to educate people about the by-gone era of manned lighthouses. When not entertaining guests, she sat on the porch and reflected upon her early life with beloved husband Tom, now deceased, and the excitement of settling into their first home only days after getting married.
Betsy thoroughly enjoyed her visit and she left knowing that she created a greater appreciation of lighthouse keeping – a chapter in her history that is near and dear to her heart.
