'Art for Art's Sake' fundraiser sails along

BILL PEARSON/Boothbay RegisterPatricia Reh is an art lover and last weekend she didn’t have far to go finding some fabulous works. Reh attended all three days of the “Art for Art’s Sake” show at Hodgdon Yachts in Southport.
The annual art show sponsored by Lincoln Arts ran from Aug. 21 to Aug. 23 with exhibits ranging from watercolors to oil paintings, photography, ceramics, crafts and weaving. “I love coming here because the people are so nice. They tell you all about their work, and I think this is wonderful,” Reh said.
She thought one piece was so wonderful, a photograph of the Footbridge, she paid $275.
Aug. 21 began the event with a two-hour reception for the 26 artists to meet anyone who wanted to attend. Organizer and artist Wendy Bellows said the reception “allows people first dibs on the artwork.”
Aug. 22 was the center attraction called “Artist Interaction Day.” Visitors can roam around the Hodgdon Yachts warehouse reviewing all the artwork and discussing it with the artists. Aug. 23 gave art lovers one last chance to review an exhibit or purchase it.
Lincoln Arts has sponsored “Art for Art’s Sake” since 1995. All of the 26 artists have a link to the Boothbay region and five new artists participated this year, said Bellows.
Jane and Peter Gardner of Boothbay Harbor are longtime attendees. "We come every year and love the uniqueness about it,” Jane Gardner said. Husband Peter agreed, adding, "We know quite a few of the artists and the work is eclectic.”
Bellows first displayed her artwork four years ago at "Art for Arts' Sake" and became an organizer in 2023. “People come each year looking for something to catch their eye and take back home,” she said. Bellows' art includes oil and acrylic paintings and weaving.
Fran Scannell is a plein air artist. This was her fourth “Art for Art’s Sake” exhibit. Scannell lives in Southport and creates arts from scenes mostly on Bailey, Westport and Monhegan islands. “This is definitely a hobby. It’s not a money-making thing. This gets me outside drawing, and meeting other people,” Scannell said.
