Annual Cabbage Island Swim August 18
The Sprucewold Association's Rusticators Dinner was well attended on Saturday night, the only thing missing was Social Committee Bartender-for-Life Kent Gonzales but Greg Muzzy ably stepped in for the night.
Greeter/SA treasurer Donna Muzzy welcomed friends old and new to the historic Sprucewold Lodge dining room.
Kathy Moulaison and Mary Otto served the corn and clam chowder then the lodge staff stepped in for the lobster line. Thank you to Dana and Richard Pizer of Sprucewold Lodge for providing such a luscious lobster dinner, complete with blueberry crumble warm from the oven.
The 2013 round of annual meetings are over; Linekin Heights Association and Sprucewold Association last week on August 3, and the Sprucewold Beach Club on August 10. President Richard Lippincott and treasurer Jack Angel will served the Linekin Heights Association for only one more year, Suzanne Marinell has passed the torch of LHA secretary to Pam Wilgren.
Sprucewold Association Safety Committee will now be led Greg Muzzy, with our sincere appreciation and thanks to past chairman Curt Norred for his hard work raising awareness of fire safety and bringing the Maine State Forestry Service Chipping program to Sprucewold.
For fire safety please remember to trim your underbrush and overhanging branches to maintain a clearing around your cabin. Leave the brush pile at the edge of the road with the cut end facing out.
The 2013 Chipping Day is Thursday, Aug.15. The new officers for the Sprucewold Beach Club are Wally Moulaison, president; Elisa Goldsmith, vice president; and Pat Thompson as secretary. Past President Jim Oliphant, Ron Onderko and former secretary Elaine Rittershaus will join the BOD.
Thank you, Jim, for your leadership for the past few years. Patrick Rayball has been the beach attendant for the past two years and has done an excellent job, with a seamless transition from the example set by Jim Powers.
Patrick returns to college next week so all hands on deck and please think about possible candidates for the position for next season. The Boothbay Region Fish & Game Association's 9th Annual Saltwater Fishing Tournament was held on Saturday and Sunday, August 10-11.
Jacob Moulaison took second place in the kids division with a 10.5 inch harbor pollock; he won $25. Keith Moulaison caught no fish but did win a raffle for a gift certificate to the Lobster Dock for $25. It was a great weekend to be on the water despite no striper or blue fish catch.
The Annual Cabbage Island Swim will be held on Sunday, Aug. 18 at 2 p.m. Swimmers will gather at the beach to be transported to the south shore of Cabbage Island for the swim across the Linekin Bay to Sprucewold Beach.
Thanks to Sprucewold Harbor Master Sandy Young for his organizational work to coordinate with SBC members and the U.S. Coast Guard to ensure the swimmers safety. Carole Gonzales and Elisa Goldsmith are in charge of hot chocolate and snacks to warm the swimmers after their swim across the bay.
Please let Carole or Elisa know if you wish to volunteer to provide snacks. The sign up for the swim is at the kiosk at the bottom of the beach stairs. Come one, come all. Greg Muzzy, chairman of the Sprucewold Safety Committee, would like to invite all Sprucewold members to observe a Boothbay Harbor Fire Department training drill on August 20 at 5:30 p.m. This training drill will simulate a fire at the Sprucewold Lodge and will involve laying hose from the bottom of Crest at Lobster Cove to the Sprucewold Lodge.
Please allow emergency vehicles the right of way during this training. A good turnout by Sprucewold residents will show support for the Boothbay Harbor Fire Department and all they have done for this area over the last few years.
Chief Nick Upham has taken a personal interest in being sure that firefighting water will be a reality in Sprucewold and he appreciates all we have done to be sure his trucks have adequate clearance on all roads and driveways in Sprucewold. Come out and support our local fire department.
