American Legion Post 36
Effective Tuesday, March 21, the Legion Hall has an active security system. In addition, the lock box in the back of the building pass code has been changed. All members of the Legion who routinely are in the building at least 2 times a week have a front and back door key. Others that need access at various times have access to the combination for the rear door key box. Once inside, the alarm has to be de-activated. Failure to do that will bring the Sheriff. All others who need access to the building will have to get one of a Post officer to meet you there. If you feel it would be helpful to have access, contact me to make those arrangements. All those who have keys and those who need access via the key box will be notified by text of the frequent combination changes. This has all been caused by a bad eliminate focusing on breaking into non-profit facilities, vandalizing and stealing any cash found.
On the positive side, our breakfasts return on April 9. Based on feedback from last year, the hours are now 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. As we all know, the prices for everything have gone up. We experienced that last year which significantly reduced our income even though we had record attendance. So, unfortunately, we have had to raise the suggested donation to $12 for adults and $6 for kids under 12. I think we can all agree, this is still the best deal in town.
More good news, after years of discussing a American Legion baseball team, it looks like it finally is happening. John Splaine has been involved with youth baseball for many years. He came to the legion wanting to know our interest, and we enthusiastically said yes, but the time wasn’t right. Two great things have now happened. One, the time is now right relative to the age of the kids and two, Shanon Cotta joined our Post. Shanon has been involved with youth baseball and John Splaine for a number of years. So, the stars aligned and we are ready to inaugurate the “36ers!” So, stand by for more information!
The Post has also started a student scholarship program thanks to the generosity of the Rowe family who provided the seed money to get it started. The first goal is to reach a certain financial level that we will able to provide scholarships in perpetuity, a goal we expect to reach soon.
Lastly, we are initiating the Home Town Heroes program in the region. You will hear more about this soon. The goal is to have our veterans’ pictures hung on our flag poles much like we have our high school graduates. Details are still be worked out, but we are well on our way to make this happen.
So, your support of our breakfasts will go a long way to ensure success of all of these new initiatives.
