Alex Arsenault, coach of the Boothbay Region High School girls tennis team for the past 15 years, said he is glad to have enough players to compete in the five matches this coming season after having only enough players for the three singles matches last year. Two of those singles players graduated but returning is the reigning conference most valuable player and one of the top players in the state, Laura Chapman.

Chapman, a junior, has not lost a Mountain Valley Conference match since becoming a Seahawk.

“She (Laura) is a very good player and we’re glad she’s back,” said Arsenault.

Chapman has played in the state singles tournament and finished in the Round of 16 both years. She has dominated the opponents’ top players in the MVC, often winning without allowing her foe to win a game.

Senior Sarah Kreft is the lone returnee to the team, said Arsenault, “but we have some athletes who have joined the team to bolster our chances of winning more matches.”

Kreft’s sister, Hannah, a sophomore is one of three sophomores on the team, the other two being Abigail Orchard and Maddie Andreasen.

Two other juniors, Ivory Cody and Sawyer Blake, help fill out the roster and Arsenault said he is waiting to hear if a senior player is committing to join the team.

Last season, the Seahawks finished with a 7-4 record, losing in the Class C South tournament in the quarterfinal match against Waynflete, 3-2.

“Maranacook joined the MVC this season and they will be one of our toughest opponents,” said Arsenault. After the season-opening match against Hall-Dale Monday, April 22, the Seahawks will host Mountain Valley on Friday, April 26 at 4 p.m.
