Two lessons in magnanimity from a famous two-time loser

    Dear Editor:

Although Nixon carried California in 1960, Republicans claimed they had proof that the presidency was stolen from him by ballot-tampering Democrats in Illinois and Texas, both states that Eisenhower had twice carried handily. Even though just 100,000 votes were the difference nationally, Nixon did not contest the election because he thought the country didn’t need another bitter political controversy after McCarthyism, and was at the inauguration watching Republican Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren swear Kennedy in.

"Always remember that certain people will always hate you, and that those who do hate you cannot win unless you hate them in return, thereby destroying yourself."- Richard M. Nixon, the day he resigned.
