Steven P. Dutton

Mon, 09/23/2013 - 3:00pm

Steven Paul Dutton, 55, a well-loved and popular life enthusiast, died September 14, 2013 with his wife Deb and little brother Jason, as he always referred to him, by his side.

Steve was born in Augusta on June 14, 1958, and was always happy to believe when his mother would say, “Steven, look at all the people who put flags out in honor of your birthday,” which has always remained a standing joke throughout his adult life.

Steve grew up in Augusta and always spoke of the idyllic childhood he had with his loving parents Linwood and Anita Dutton, beloved brothers Scott and Jason and sister Jody. Steve was also greatly influenced and inspired by his grandparents, along with his many aunts and uncles.

Steve, as a high school entrepreneur and retail businessman, graduated in 1977 from Cony High School in Augusta. Shortly after graduating, he relocated to the Boston area. Steve's work history included Director of Store Planning for Rix Drug from 1978-1984, Assistant Store Planning Director for Morse Shoe company (Fayva Division) from 1984-1986.

In 1986, Steve's career experiences and networking abilities lead him to SCS Systems, a New York based company, where he was responsible for marketing and selling commercial flooring throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. In 1990 he joined J.F. McDonald, where he created a new National Accounts Program, marketing and selling commercial flooring to Retail Chain Stores throughout the United States. His last stop before starting his own company was also with a New York based commercial flooring company which he was with from 1992-2011.

In 2011, proudly driven by his outstanding reputation for customer service and his desire to further expand his design skills, he established his own company, SDA Architectural Finishes. This move proved to be very challenging, rewarding and fulfilling working on both national and international projects right up to his untimely death.

Steve married Deb Wyman on May 14, 1993 on the Marginal Way in Ogunquit. Although spending just shy of 25 wonderful years together, Steve and Deb enjoyed a very active social and travel life, with a huge circle of friends. Together they hosted many wonderful evenings at their spectacular 20-sided home high above the mouth of the Damariscotta River. “Farview” (feng shui) is a very special place that they designed and had continued to build together since 2001.

Steve was a consummate foodie in the true sense of the word. He never referred to himself as a chef, only a guy that loved to cook. He was always experimenting with new recipes or theme night parties in which his friends and family were the grateful recipients. Steve was well known in the local restaurant scene as, the “guy to bounce new ideas off.”

His passion for entertaining and electronic gadgets was infectious, along with his intense desire for learning, always wondering what new technology was around the corner. He served as an unofficial “I.T.” guy for several of his friends when they had computer problems, or were just in need of advice.

Steve will be so sadly missed by so many who came to adore his wit, talent, compassion and generosity that he showered unconditionally on them.

He was predeceased by his parents, Linwood and Anita Dutton, and his brother, Scott.

He is survived by his wife and soul mate, Deb Wyman of East Boothbay; brother, Jason Dutton and his wife Denise of Chelsea; sister, Jody Soule and her husband David of Clinton; an uncle, John Luttrell and his wife Pat of Wells; sister in-law, Sybil Dutton of Great Falls, Mont.; nieces, Emily Dutton, Katelyn Dutton, Heather Dutton, Kayla Pulst and Kimberly Dutton; nephews, Jamie Soule, Bradley Soule, Scott Dutton Jr. and Sean Dutton; as well as numerous cousins and a whole host of dear and great friends.

At Steve's request, there will no formal memorial service but in staying with his passion for entertaining there will be a open house and celebration of Steve's life at “Farview” in East Boothbay from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013.

In lieu of flowers and Steve’s love for cooking, the family is in the process of establishing The Steve P. Dutton Culinary Scholarship Fund. There will be a formal announcement when the scholarship is established and information will be listed on Steve’s Book of Memories page.

You are invited to share your condolences, memories, and photos with the family by visiting their Book of Memories page at www.hallfuneralhomes.com.
