Sprucewold Column: A peeper, woodpeckers and more
We have a spring peeper (pseudacris crucifer) living in the leaf litter outside our chimney. Saturday night he climbed on the window at night, we could see him as well as hear him and now appears to be living in our fireplace wall. According to my colleague and science teacher, they are only about an inch long and live about three years in the wild. We know it is a male because only the males sing to attract females and he should be ready to hibernate but these warm days and cool nights mimic spring. Unfortunately, he does occasionally peep throughout the day!
There are several 4-foot tall mullein plants in the garden and this week there was a bit of competition between a downy woodpecker and a pileated woodpecker. The big pileated woodpecker chased the smaller downy one off the same plant when there were plenty to share! We also have a hummingbird that doesn’t allow another hummingbird on any of the four hummingbird feeders or flowering plants around the cabin, very territorial.
As much as we miss Jack and Sara, it has been great to see their daughter Kristi Angel Patterson next door in the Angel cabin. Her son Trevor was here for a visit with his lfriend earlier in August.
We only have a few left so if you want a hard copy of the Sprucewold Directory, please let me know. Pat Moore and Tina MIller stopped by and picked up their directories, Dottie Reilly delivered most of those for Sunset Road residents and I have delivered a few to cabins and mailboxes on request. Danielle Bazinet has done a great job in her first year as Keeper of the Directory, thank you.
Sprucewold Beach Club Harbormaster Captain Sandy Young wants to remind everyone that Bradley Simmons is taking over the maintenance and overall upkeep of moorings in the Sprucewold Beach Club mooring field formerly handled by Blake’s Marine. Blake's will no longer handle moorings in Linekin Bay. The town ordinance stipulates that moorings have to be inspected annually and maintained by the mooring owner. Failure in following this could result in the mooring being hauled out at the mooring owners expense and the forfeit of the mooring permit. It is imperative that all mooring owners contact Bradley to set up accounts and contact information. Please call him ASAP at (207) 633-5694.
There are still plenty of weeks left of the season, time to do those things you didn’t get to yet. It is commendable the number of Sprucewold residents who volunteer around the greater Boothbay community from the Opera House at Boothbay Harbor to the hospital, the YMCA, the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, The Boothbay Region Art Foundation, the area thrift shops, churches, and more. Think about it for next year if you haven’t made a commitment and would like to support your favorite place and find you have some time on your hands.
Please be certain to welcome our new neighbors to Sprucewold, there were a number of cabins that changed ownership this summer. We know that they will come to love the Sprucewold community just like the rest of us!
