The Southport Volunteer Fire Department held its 50th annual public auction on Saturday, Aug. 20.

Fire Chief Gerald Gamage said he had run the auction for the past 24 years.  Carl Pierce conducted it for over the previous 20 years before his death in 1993.

The auction was named Carl Pierce Memorial Auction in his honor.

Gamage said the department collects items left off at the station during the year. “It is a good community event,” he said.

Following the auction and flea market, Gamage reported that an estimated $23,500 was raised for department operations.

A 1999 Mercedes minivan with 39,000 miles was donated by its local owner and drew a winning bid of $5,500, said Gamage.

Southport Central School volunteers sold refreshments to benefit the school.
