Solar home tour October 15

Wed, 09/28/2016 - 9:00am

There will be a public tour of the Mayhews' solar home on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. located at 60 Campbell St., Boothbay Harbor.

Please come visit this 2,950 sf solar home with attached greenhouse, solar hot water, solar hot air and solar electric systems. It is a demonstration of green building practices that includes a synergistic blend of an attached greenhouse with 1,000 gallon (thermal mass) pool, a radiant floor heating system on the lower level, a mini split dx heat pump on the second floor, and the solar air heating system on the third floor, inside of a super insulated building envelope.

The grounds have raised organic produce and flower gardens, beer hops, apple, cherry and peach trees and is situated on an elevated location, with a south-facing harbor view.

This home is a very close to net-zero energy, and is often net-zero electric. This 35-year work-in-progress is incrementally approaching net zero energy.

This tour is part of the American Solar Energy Association’s Solar Home Tour.
