Shannon’s Unshelled seeking planning board’s help finding new home

Shannon Schmelzer told Boothbay Planning Board members Dec. 20 she wanted to talk about the future. Specifically, she wanted to discuss the future of her business, Shannon’s Unshelled. For the past year, she moved her business from Boothbay Harbor to Boothbay. She used 7 Common Drive in Boothbay as a temporary location. Her season ended Dec. 17. She  plans to reopen in May,  but a lingering question remains. Where?

“I love the current location, but Paul (Coulombe) let me use it as a temporary spot,” she told the planning board. “I’m looking for a new location, and I wanted some feedback from you before relocating.”

She is considering a familiar spot. Schmelzer sought information regarding 798 Wiscasset Road, the former location of Pinkham’s Seafood Market, Food Trucks A-go, and a gourmet popcorn business. Schmelzer sought planning board advice before pursuing the location. Chairman Bruce Bowler said her business was a permitted use with only a couple restrictions. One is limited parking. The ordinance only allows five off-street parking spots. “That may be a problem,” Schmelzer said.

The planning board directed Code Enforcement Officer Dan Feeney to seek a legal opinion from the town attorney about Schmelzer’s inquiry. “There are a lot of questions that need answers, and we will find that information for you,” Bowler said.

In other action, the board voted, 4-0, approving Marden Builders’ application to move a structure out of the highest annual tide line. The application also included a revised plan for a new foundation with no expansion of the existing structure. Eric Marden represented his clients Brian and Jennifer Graves of  Cumberland who own the 45 Delano Drive property.

The application was tabled last month. The board conducted a Nov. 16 site visit checking a spot further back from the water. The proposed spot proved “less non-conforming” and won planning board approval.

The board meets next at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17 in the conference room.
