Scott Lee at All Saints July 27, August 3

Fri, 07/25/2014 - 4:00pm

This week and next All Saints By-the-Sea welcomes back the Rev. Scott Lee. On July 27 Holy Communion will be celebrated at the 8 a.m. service and will be followed by Morning Prayer at 10 a.m. On August 3, both the 8 and 10 a.m. services will be Holy Communion. A social hour with refreshments follows the 10 a.m. services. At 9 a.m. on Tuesday, July 29 and Tuesday, August 5, Lee will lead a discussion group on the church porch.

Lee has recently become priest-in-charge at Christ Church, Stratford, Conn. He was born and grew up in Meridian, Miss., amid the turmoil of the struggle for equal rights and desegregation. His mother Julia Katherine was a public school teacher and the first white teacher to agree to cross the color line and teach in a formerly all African American school. Her gentle activism is a major influence in his life and ministry.

Lee received bachelor of arts and master of divinity degrees from The College of Arts and Sciences of The University of the South and its School of Theology, though the degrees were 20 years apart. He also holds a master of the art of teaching (English) from Vanderbilt University.

Lee served as rector of Trinity Parish, in Wethersfield, Conn., from 2007 until 2014. Before becoming a transplanted New Englander, he was canon residentiary at Trinity Cathedral, Little Rock, Ark., rector at St. Mark’s Church, Nashville, Tenn., and priest-in-charge of Trinity Church, Clarksville, Tenn. During his tenure in Arkansas, Lee was adjunct faculty of the Department of Philosophy and Religion of The University of Arkansas, Little Rock, teaching Old Testament/Hebrew Bible and History of Christian Thought.

The church is on Southport Island on All Saints Road about two miles on your left as you drive south on Route 238 (look for the Episcopal Church sign by the side of the road). Parking is available along Route 238, or if necessary, in the limited number of handicapped parking spaces off All Saints Road. A golf cart will ferry persons from the handicapped lot to the church steps. You may also come to church by private boat or by the tour boat Novelty, which leaves Boothbay Harbor from Pier 8 at 9 a.m. Novelty picks up passengers from the church dock at 11:40 a.m. for return to Boothbay. The very beautiful and simple wood chapel is open for quiet prayer and meditation during the week. More information about the church and its history can be found at allsaintssouthport.org.
