News and Notes from The Community Center

We have posted several articles on our Facebook page lately about the growing number of people living alone and suffering from the pangs of isolation. We want to help. In fact, the main reason behind the start-up of The Center was to conquer the loneliness of the invisible population of home bound adults in our community. This phenomenon crosses all social and economic strata and we make no distinction here — we have met the challenge with cheerful, enthusiastic volunteers, programs and activities to stimulate conversation and togetherness, and good healthy snacks. We invite you to come and join us and we encourage all medical practitioners to write a prescription for fun at The Community Center when confronted with a patient suffering from isolation depression.

We have been especially fortunate during the past several storms in that we have not lost power and many people have come in to get warm, join in the fun and games, and even wash up and change clothes.

We are always in need of volunteers and especially those who would like to drive our van on field trips and shuttling neighbors to walk at the Y or to help with People Helping People trips to the store or a medical appointment. It is all about aging in place and, at the same time, getting out in the community to mix with old friends and make some new ones.

Joke of the week: Q: What do you call an old snowman? A: Water.

Don’t forget — if you need the van to pick you up and take you to walk at the Y or if you need more information about our programs, call 633-9876.
