New innkeepers, director chosen for Southport lighthouse

Thu, 01/08/2015 - 12:00pm

More than 200 people from around the world applied for the dream jobs: keepers for the Inn at Cuckolds Lighthouse.

Captain Mark Zinkiewicz, Heather Graham and Captain Ruth Reighley captured these coveted positions, and will begin their service as keepers in the 2015 season. To earn these volunteer positions, candidates demonstrated extensive nautical experience, superb culinary skills, and embraced a hospitality and service ethic.

Zinkiewicz is a New York native, world traveler, and professional musician who has performed with B.J. Thomas, Jackson Browne and others.

Zinkiewicz holds a 100-ton Master’s License, buys and restores antique boats, and has spent nearly 1,000 days at sea.

Graham, a former publisher of Focus Magazine of Lake County, Florida, co-hosts a weekly radio program and serves on numerous civic and nonprofit boards. She has participated in the start-up of a new boutique hotel, served as marketing and events coordinator for eight downtown restaurants, and opened her own popular wine bar.

Graham is a skilled pastry chef, caterer and events planner.

Zinkiewicz and Graham jumped at the chance to fulfill their dream of operating an inn, where they could put their love of cooking and entertaining to work.

“To get that opportunity in a maritime community would truly be our greatest dream,” the couple said in their letter of inquiry.

Captain Ruth Reighley from Waterford, Connecticut has been selected for the newly added position of lighthouse captain and director, maritime operations, based at the new Cuckolds Welcome Center.

Reighley began her maritime career as first mate aboard the Seldon III ferryboat operated by the state of Connecticut. She has subsequently served as fleet first mate and stood watch for the captain of commercial vessels and private yachts in locations from New England to the Virgin Islands and Bahamas, cruising an average of 4,000 nautical miles per year.

“We are delighted to welcome these three energetic, talented keepers to our team,” said Paul Coulombe, president of the Cuckolds Council. “They exemplify the unique mix of skills, commitment and personality that will ensure that Cuckolds guests enjoy unsurpassed hospitality and an unforgettable experience.”

A lighthouse tour schedule will be posted on the Cuckolds website in early spring.
