For anyone who has been to the Trevett Country Store lately (or maybe ever), the lobster and crabmeat rolls are already well-known.

One of the reasons for their popularity is the fact that owner Kim Lewis gets her lobsters and crabmeat fresh daily.

The second, and maybe most important reason, is that both seafood rolls are big. OK, they're huge!

Lewis said they go through a lot of crabmeat. “We use at least 10-15 packages a day,” she said.

The lobster rolls are as, and possibly more, popular than the crabmeat rolls. They consist of a huge mound of fresh lobster meat, mixed with just enough mayonnaise to hold the meat together, in a toasted hot dog roll with one small leaf of lettuce. Just the way a Maine lobster roll should be made.

“We've had quite a few write-ups about our lobster rolls,” Lewis said. “There was a story about them in the Sunday Tampa Times a few years ago. We made it all the way to Tampa, Florida.”

Elaine Athans, from Naples, Florida, was at the store/restaurant having a lobster roll on June 26. She said she makes a point of going there for a lobster roll (or several) every time she's in town. “I come here on vacation, and I have been here every single day for a lobster roll for lunch. And sometimes I come back for dinner and get another one.”

She said she doesn't eat lobster in Florida. “It's not Maine lobster. Even if they say they got it from Maine, I say no — I have to come to Maine for lobster.”

Athans said she arrived in Maine almost a week before. Asked if she ever varied her menu at the store, Athans said, “Oh gosh, no. Absolutely not. I love lobster, and I've never seen a lobster roll like this.”

The deep-fried haddock sandwiches are a big seller, too. The store/restaurant also has fried clams and scallops, all fresh, all fried to a perfect golden-brown. And at least one fresh made dessert is available daily, a favorite being the chocolate cake with chocolate frosting.

Other items carried are a decent wine selection and basics like milk, bread, sugar and flour.

There are a few tables inside the small country store/restaurant, and several outside on the deck over the Back River. You can sit there enjoying a monster lobster or crabmeat roll, and watch the river flow by, and see the last manual swing bridge in the country, connecting Hodgdon and Barters Islands.
