Man, 81, pleads not guilty to threatening

An 81-year-old man who was on bail conditions after allegedly driving 90 miles per hour in Damariscotta was rearrested after he allegedly broke his bail conditions and made threats.

Joseph Griffin, 81, of Damariscotta pleaded not guilty to charges that he violated the conditions of his release and domestic violence criminal threatening.

Damariscotta Police Officer James Dotson responded to a home on Main Street in Damariscotta at approximately 8:15 p.m., Monday, Aug. 3, after receiving a call from a woman who stated that Griffin had allegedly become violent. According to the arrest report, Griffin began yelling and shouting after dinner and at one point was alleged to have picked up a glass full of water and thrown it to the ground.

The victim stated that she was scared that Griffin might hurt her and took the phone and went outside to call the police.

Griffin was eventually arrested by Dotson and charged with Class D domestic violence criminal threatening and Class E violating the conditions of his release. According to the arrest report, Griffin had alleged had a “couple drinks of Irish whiskey.”

Griffin had been arrested on July 4 in Damariscotta and charged with a pair of Class E misdemeanors; one for allegedly attaching false plates to a vehicle and a charge of criminal speed, after Griffin allegedly was clocked going 90 miles per hour.

Griffin will have a court date Sept. 14 at the Lincoln County court house in Wiscasset. Convictions of Class D crimes carry a maximum sentence of 364 days in jail and up to a $2,000 fine. Class E crimes have a maximum sentence of six months in jail and up to a $1,000 fine.

Griffin was held on $100 cash bail at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset and was court-ordered to have no contact with the victim, not to use or possess alcohol or drugs and not to return to the address on Main Street and to check in three times a week with the Damariscotta Police Department.
