Lowell Watson birdied the final hole of the Maine State Senior Amateur Golf Championship on Sept. 3 to win his second title. Watson, 68, a member of the Boothbay Harbor Country Club, trailed by seven strokes after shooting a first round 78 at the Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono.

Watson started the second round in the fourth-to-last group,  but he charged up the leaderboard with a second day round of 70. His score was the lowest of the two-day event.

Watson knew he needed to post a low score on the final day, and hoped the leaders struggled in order to win the tournament.

“You don’t usually win after falling behind as far as I did,” Watson said. “I was playing well on the second the day, and after I birdied the last hole it looked like I had a good chance to win.”

Watson’s birdie put him in the lead, and he had to wait until the final group finished to determine the tournament’s outcome. Watson won the tournament after Mike Norris missed a putt on the 18th hole. Watson won by one stroke with a two day score of 148.

Watson credited Boothbay Harbor Country Club head golf pro Chad Penman as being instrumentally in his success this summer.

“Chad deserves a lot of credit for helping me with my game,” Watson said. ‘We worked on a lot of things, but the biggest improvement is in my swing plane.”

Watson won his first state amateur gold championship in 2001.
