Lincoln County schedules its first electronic-waste collection event

Plans for the first e-waste collection event at Lincoln County’s Recycling Center were announced at the Sept. 16 meeting of the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners.

Tim Richardson, Lincoln County Recycling Supervisor, announced that the event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25 between 8 a.m. and noon at the Recycling Center, 54 Huntoon Hill Road in Wiscasset.

Any resident of Lincoln County is welcome to bring their electronic waste to the event. The list of items that will be accepted include televisions, computers, VCRs, printers, and “anything that is electronic,” according to Richardson.

One exception, however, is cell phones, which are not included in the e-waste event.

The event will achieve a number of benefits, both for county residents with electronic waste and for the Recycling Center.

By providing a specific collection place and date, the Recycling Center hopes to keep electronic waste out of the regular collection containers and therefore out of the county’s landfills. They have contracted with eWaste Recycling Solutions to provide a safe option for recycling the county’s electronic devices.

Once the material is collected at the Lincoln County Recycling Center, it will be taken to eWaste’s facility in Auburn for disassembly and disposal. eWaste Recycling states that most of the material collected is either reused in the manufacture of new electronic products or in other goods.

The Recycling Center has also announced that compost will be available for purchase by area gardeners.

Two types of compost are offered: yard waste compost is available for $20 per cubic yard and food waste compost is priced at $30 per cubic yard.

This is the first year that the Recycling Center has offered food waste compost.

Those wishing to purchase a smaller quantity may buy a 32-gallon bag (approximately 25-30 pounds) of either type of compost for $3 at the Recycling Center.
