Hurricane Matthew spurs surprise pop up craft fair at Boothbay Railway Village

Rain and wind prompts rescheduling of festival

This Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15 and 16 are the last days of the season at Boothbay Railway Village and these days are now a second chance to pick up Maine-made fine art and crafts that you might have missed at Fall Foliage Festival.

According to Margaret Hoffman, Boothbay Railway Village Executive Director and Coordinator for Fall Foliage Festival, “When I watched the radar early Sunday morning my heart just sank, overnight Hurricane Matthew had moved out to sea unexpectedly and sent a major rain event right up the coast and on top of the Festival. It was disappointing for the Museum and the Boothbay Info Center, but a much bigger blow to the artists and makers who have expenses to recoup through sales and many count on day two for being the day when they make a profit.” Some of the vendors stayed on for Columbus Day but high winds forced most to abandoned their hopes and their tents by mid-morning.

The vendors have been invited back to Boothbay this weekend for a special Pop Up Craft Fair on the Museum’s Village Green. If the weather is not cooperating again, they will be set up inside the Boothbay Town Hall. Anyone wishing to visit only to shop with the vendors is asked to make a donation for entry.

The last steam train rides of the regular season will be offered on Saturday. On Sunday, the orange 1940s Whitcomb diesel locomotive will lead the train for the last time in 2016. The steam locomotive will operate for both Ghost Train and North Pole Express departures.

The Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Train departures will be on the hours between 11 and 4. Museum admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $6 for children, children under 3 and Boothbay Railway Village Museum Members are free. Again, anyone only wanting to come and shop with the vendors is invited to simply make a donation to the Museum for entry.
