Since their reelection to the board of selectman, Wendy Wolf and Denise Griffin have swapped places on the board. Wolf is now chair and Griffin is vice chair.

Julia Latter, financial secretary, said the town has reached a 90 percent tax collection and is now equipped to accept credit cards for payment of property taxes. Latter said that, year to date, the gross income is $7,429,773 and expenditures for the general fund are $6,849,007. The bank balance is $2,698,727.

There was a discussion Monday, May 22, on the marijuana legislation issue, which was to be the topic of discussion at a Planning Board and Board of Selectmen workshop on Wednesday, May 24.

Since the April 26 informational meeting with Portland lawyer Edward “Ted” Kelleher, Wolf has been conducting research into how other states and communities have been dealing with the legalization of marijuana.

Wolf said Colorado is “the tip of the spear” on the issue. While Colorado has no social clubs, Denver is working on the concept, and while smoking the substance is culturally popular, Wolf has found that the most popular use is edible marijuana. Colorado is looking into how to deal with that as a separate issue.

Wolf discovered that Portland has been rather conservative on the issue, having been involved in a push for the moratorium in place until 2018. She saidPortland has been taking a “go slow” approach like it did with the introduction of food carts, hoping that an introduction of fewer businesses at a time will give better insight. Portland has formed a task force composed of police, business and schools, Wolf added.

During the town meeting debrief, Selectman Mike Tomko said he had a couple of conversations with people about some new ideas and is thankful people continue to show an interest in the community. However, there did seem to be some concern over the budgets. Town Manager Thomas Woodin said, “I strongly urge people to go to the budget meetings. The town meeting is where you vote, not where you begin discussion.” The board also expressed interest in moving the annual town meeting to a weeknight due to the rather small turnout this year.

Selectmen strongly urge people to seek out the vacant positions on boards and committees. Budget Committee, Board of Appeals, and the Port Committee each have two positions available. Applications can be found on the town website at www.boothbayharbor.org

The Joint Economic Development Committee is still looking for feedback from residents on the new wayfinding project. The committee urges residents to fill out a short survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DYNQQGQ

The topic for the Wednesday, June 14 Planning Board meeting will be the basketball and pickleball courts.
