Defend our rights

Tue, 01/06/2015 - 10:00am

    Dear Editor:

As evidenced by recent letters in this publication, the push for gun control is back on the front burner. Like Maine’s battle to preserve its bear hunting heritage and maintain the population by the best means appropriate, this will be another hard fight. The groups that are behind this newest push for gun control are very like the HSUS that we saw lead the charge in the bear referendum.

While the ultimate goal of HSUS is to end hunting in America altogether, the groups that have begun to gather in Maine proclaiming a need for safety have as their ultimate goal a complete end to private ownership of firearms in America.

I realize that most of gun owners in this country may not have the passion that I have. Nor do they own firearms for the same reason. Some of you are like me, true firearm enthusiasts. Many own several guns that you use for hunting or occasional target practice. Some just own a firearm for self defense and there those that may have inherited a gun or two from a loved one. Not matter why you own a gun the right to do just that is under attack and the next large scale battle is to be fought here in Maine.

If you value the rights you have to own those firearms, for whatever reasons then I urge you to go to www.nra.org and join to help defend our rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment.

After the NRA has been vilified in this and other media, I realize some gun owners may be hesitant. Here are some other groups that defend our right to bear arms as well as our hunting heritage, www.nationalgunrights.org or www.gunowners.org and www.sportsmansallianceofmaine.org; all worthwhile organizations.
