Community Center ‘guess the total’ fundraiser

When the Community Center was just starting out, Ken Oliphant came down to tell the staff he had “something they might be interested in.”

“Jane (Good) went off to see, and next thing we knew up she came carrying this huge parking meter in her arms,” volunteer Margaret Perritt said.

The parking meter was the bank that Oliphant's son had left behind when he moved out. The staff set it up in the main foyer of the center, thinking it could be a good fundraising tool.

“People can just put their spare change in, if they want,” Perritt said.

Within a couple of months, the meter was full. When the staff emptied the meter, one of them had an idea: Why not give people a chance to guess how much was in there?

Now until Feb. 15 at 4 p.m., people can come in and take a look at a photo of the final pile of coins and guess how much was there. Guesses are $1 each or six for $5. Whoever comes closest without going over will win 20 percent of the total collected.

Three volunteers insisted on rolling all the change, and only those three know the grand total.
