Candy Cane Train to return for 11th year of holiday fun

Sun, 10/30/2016 - 7:30am

The Candy Cane Train, a signature event of the local nonprofit Tri-County Literacy, will mark its 11th year with a new partner, the Amtrak Downeaster. The popular, holiday-themed family event will run two 75-minute trips daily from Brunswick Station/Visitor Center to Portland and back on Saturday, Dec. 10, and Sunday, Dec. 11. Trains will depart each day at 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Inside Brunswick Station, families can meet Mrs. Claus, write letters to Santa, view model trains on display, enjoy hot chocolate, and purchase colorful stocking stuffers, ornaments, and great children’s books.

On the train, Santa’s elves will share delicious cookies, story readers will enchant with Christmas stories, the Nor’Easters Barbershop Chorus will delight with holiday songs, and Santa himself will pay a visit to each car. Adults and families with children of all ages are welcome to enjoy the magical experience of this holiday ride.

Tickets at $20 per person will go on sale Nov. 1. There are a limited number of “lap” seat tickets available. Tickets for children under 2 years of age are free with reserved free ticket and tickets for children ages 2 to 5 are $10, but these will sell out quickly. Children with “lap” seat tickets must sit on the lap of an adult. To purchase your tickets, go to www.candycanetrain.org or call Brown Paper Tickets at 1-800-838-3006 (event #2657164). For more information, call Tri-County Literacy at 207-443-6384.

All proceeds from the event will benefit Tri-County Literacy, a local non-profit that provides free family and adult literacy services throughout the Midcoast area. The Candy Cane Train’s major sponsors are the Amtrak Downeaster, Avangrid, the James and Betty Jacobs Family Charitable Trust, Davenport Trust, and Bath Savings Institution.
