Part of the mission of the Boothbay Region's Community Center in the Meadow Mall is to enrich the lives of all residents. As part of that, the center has joined forces with Boothbay Region Elementary School's LOAFS (Leaders Organizing Activities for School) group, led by computer teacher Judy Dorr.

On Thursday, Nov. 19, the first computer class took place at the center, with seven adults attending. Dorr led the class in basic computer Internet use, including how to find a browser, what a URL meant, and how to enter it.

While Dorr instructed, students Will Perkins, Chloe Aresnault and Hali Goodwin helped out the seniors by answering questions.

“Judy is one of my clients,” Good said. “I was doing her hair and we got to talking about having students teach adults about computer use. She said she 'loves teaching but loves giving back even more' and that this would be a way to do that.”

Along with five iPads donated to the center by the Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor CSD, the Rotary Club has donated $1,000 and the Southport Island Association $500 to go towards the purchase of computers for the center, to be used by anyone using the center.

“This is a place for people to come together and not be alone,” Good said. “It's like a teen center for adults.”

Computer classes are set to continue with several more sessions. Spots are available to sign up for the classes on Jan. 7, 14 and 21 from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m.
