Boothbay senior passionate about assisting A BroaderWay

Fri, 09/05/2014 - 5:00pm

Courtney Brewer, a senior at Boothbay Region High School, is a Renaissance young woman, of sorts. She's into karate, photography, medical science, has played basketball, served on her church's altar and been involved in many other ventures.

Her latest venture is to raise between $2,500 and $5,000 for A BroaderWay Foundation.

The money she raises will help one or two girls to attend the foundation's Camp BroaderWay, a two-week camp held in August in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. The camp is for girls from urban communities in the New York City metro area with an opportunity, according to the organization's website, "to express themselves through the performing arts (such as theater, singing, dancing, etc.), visual arts, sports and other activities, as well as develop self-esteem, self-confidence, leadership skills, and a voice for what they believe in."

Brewer is the youngest daughter of Trish Brewer of Boothbay Harbor and the late Mark Brewer.

"I am very passionate about this program because of my love, awareness and desire to help others express themselves through the arts,” Brewer said. “I was fortunate to grow up with fantastic parents in a beautiful community filled with the love for the arts, and I would love to help one or two of the girls experience something as fantastic as Camp BroaderWay."

Brewer has opened an account at The First bank in Boothbay Harbor under her name. The account is named A BroaderWay. Anonymous donations can be made there by asking about the account.

She is also working with the Carousel Music Theater in Boothbay Harbor on a fundraiser on Sunday, September 21. Discounted ticket prices ($30 down from $36) for the show will allow the theater to donate $3 per attendee to be donated to A BroaderWay.

Donation cans have been placed at the House of Pizza in the Meadow Mall and at Carousel Music Theater for Brewer’s cause.
