Boothbay Region squeezed in Wiscasset

Games don't get much more dramatic than the one the Boothbay Region High School boys varsity baseball team played to open the season on Friday, April 24.

The game featured Boothbay coming from behind to tie the score, close plays, sharp pitching and a walk-off win.

The Seahawks (0-1) were able to give reigning Western Class D champs Wiscasset all they could handle for seven and two-thirds innings, before Wiscasset was able to claim a 2-1 victory via a suicide squeeze.

Boothbay pitcher Nick Burge dazzled in his opening day start; the tall right hander threw every pitch for Boothbay and struck out five batters.

Boothbay Region Coach Josh Garneau said he was impressed with his team's effort in the first game of the young season.

“I thought they played real well,” he said. “They competed, they made a lot of smart plays in the field, which is what we have been working on, pitcher Nick Burge pitched a great game — threw strikes and kept them off-balance with his off-speed pitches. Had a couple rallies, (if we) get a little more timely hitting, we should be all set.”

Garneau said Boothbay would continue to work on its hitting. The Seahawks were able to score when Julian Aponte reached on a fielding error, and reached home after two subsequent Wiscasset errors.

Burge and Wiscasset's Tyler Bailey matched shutout innings until the fifth inning when Wiscasset took a 1-0 lead. But Boothbay Region answered immediately with Aponte's run, and the two teams went into extra innings.

Boothbay was able to get in a last-minute scare, too. Xavier Downing reached in the top of the eighth on a walk, then stole two bases to reach third with only one out. But Wiscasset was able to escape the inning and strand the Seahawk baserunner on third.

In the bottom half of the eighth inning, Wiscasset was able to load the bases and a suicide squeeze by Bailey gave Wiscasset the 2-1 win.

The two games this season between Wiscasset and Boothbay Region will simply be flip-flopped. Wiscasset will travel to Boothbay Harbor May 26.
