On Sept. 10, the BikeMaine event rolled into Boothbay Harbor and set up camp on Sherman Field next to Boothbay Region High School. Around 350 cyclists were involved, along with numerous volunteers.

On Sept. 11, a lobster bake was thrown for the cyclists in the footbridge parking lot, and Sept. 12 a full breakfast was provided. In both cases the food was prepared by the cafeteria staff from the Boothbay schools, who worked late Thursday and early Friday to make everything work right.

This work included hauling equipment and food down from the school to the footbridge parking lot and back, and washing over 300 trays after the bake was over.

As a thank you for the efforts of the Boothbay region schools district and the cafeteria staff, Town Manager Tom Woodin presented Superintendent Eileen King a check for $2,580 at the Community School District Committee meeting on Oct. 8.

“This is to help offset the costs incurred by the school for making BikeMaine shine,” Woodin said.

Woodin also presented the members of the cafeteria staff with gift cards as a thank you for their efforts, and handed Food Services Director Darlene French the extra ones for members of her staff who were unable to attend the meeting. He thanked them for their efforts.

“They really stepped up to the plate for this event,” Chairman Larry Colcord joked.

“Well, you can certainly dish it out, Larry,” Woodin replied.

The puns continued for some time after that.
