Boothbay football wins homecoming game

It seemed nobody was happier to see the friendly confines of Sherman Field this homecoming weekend than the Boothbay Region High School football team’s offense. The squad has struggled all season scoring only 13 points in 16 quarters.

But all that changed Friday night. The Seahawks exploded for three first quarter touchdowns in defeating Telstar, 38-8, for their first victory of the season. Seahawk running backs Dima Gosselin and Xavier Downing led the offensive effort. Gosselin scored on an 18-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Duncan Drapeau. Boothbay Region converted the two-point conversion with a rush to take an 8-0 led.

With 5:32 remain in the quarter, Downing scored on a 35-yard counter play. The Seahawks converted the two-point conversion when Drapeau connected with split end Abel Bryer with a 12-yard pass.

The quarter’s third touchdown came on the final play. Gosselin scored on a seven yard sweep. The two-point conversion failed on a rush attempt.

For Downing, one of seven Seahawks playing their final game at Sherman Field, several elements went into the team’s victory.

“Everything came together for us this week,” Downing said. “It was an important game. It’s Homecoming. It’s senior night. We had a good week of practice and it really showed on the field.”

For Gosselin, a junior, the offense learned a lot during its early season struggles.

“Tonight, we executed our plays and stuck with it all night,” he said.

In total, Boothbay Region scored five touchdowns and one field goal. Gosselin also rushed for a touchdown. Other Seahawks rushing for a touchdown were Drapeau and running back Cole Barter.

Downing booted a 20-yard field goal late in the second quarter.

The Boothbay defense also dominated its side of the ball. Telstar’s only points came with 5:21 remaining in the game. The Boothbay Region second team offense muffed a snap in shotgun formation from the 8-yard line which the Telstar defense recovered for a touchdown.

The Boothbay Region defense shutdown the Rebels running game. Telstar rushed for negative 31 yards on 28 attempts. Defensive end Draku Peaslee made four tackles and assisted on nine others.

Despite losing the season’s first four games, Seahawk coach Bryan Dionne expected his team to turn in a dominant performance.

“We worked hard this week. And we were focused,” he said. “This is a game we needed for our seniors. And one, we needed to make the playoffs.”

Boothbay Region is 1-4 in league play. Telstar drops to 0-5.

The Seahawks travel to Dixfield on Friday, Oct. 16 to play No. 4 Dirigo (4-2) in Western Maine South Class D league play.
