A better plan

    Dear Editor:

The roundabout design suggested by Frank Helman in a recent issue of the Register would be a great improvement over the current one shown at Boothbay town meetings. It would give more land to the Common, which the entire town loves, rather than cramping it with multi-directional streets adjacent to it. It makes one wonder what might have been suggested and planned had the whole idea been open to public comment before it became virtually solidified by a few interested parties.

Since the Clipper Mart gas tanks will be removed, Route 27 South could bend gently, rather than abruptly as it currently does, west into the northern leg of the roundabout, into Corey Lane and past the Post Office, allowing for entrances from Back River Road and the route from the Botanical Gardens; south and east down the present ambulance lane, allowing for easy exit and entrance to the road to Boothbay Harbor (and the school and the Y); directly further east to both enter and exit the golf club gate; north again to Country Club Road and then rejoining Route 27. This would also obviate the extra left lane recently painted in at that junction of Route 27 North, which has already confused and compromised traffic.

I want to thank Frank Helman for making clear that a better plan than the one currently headed for adoption can come from the thoughts and suggestions of more of us who will be impacted by such a big change to the center of Boothbay, especially if this plan would be not only easier to drive but less expensive to build. There are other ways and places genuine improvements could be made to the benefit of the town with the taxes of its citizens.
