A Damariscotta man who claimed to be provoked into violence by his neighbor is facing assault charges, while being on release for another alleged domestic violence charge.

Norman Palmer, 26, is facing a Class B aggravated assault charge and a Class E charge of violating the conditions of his release.

It's alleged that on July 23 in Damariscotta, Palmer struck his neighbor repeatedly with a shovel.

According to the arrest report from Damariscotta Police Officer Jason Warlick, Palmer allegedly confronted his neighbor about “slandering” his girlfriend. The victim denied having said anything about Palmer's girlfriend, but Palmer allegedly didn't believe him and began to strike the victim with a shovel.

The victim said that Palmer struck him several times and demanded the truth, reportedly saying there would be worse consequences.

Palmer was on release for an alleged domestic violence charge and was instructed to not engage in any criminal acts.

If convicted, a Class B crime carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail and/or a $20,000 fine.
