Alcohol content beer, mixed drinks

Dear Editor:
As a former alcohol detox medical provider at a state hospital, I would like to offer objective information in case it is useful, as restaurants apply for various beverage permits.
The following shows that a standard drink such as a beer, a glass of wine, or a mixed drink served in a restaurant have the same amount of alcohol in them.
In the United States, one "standard" drink contains roughly 14 grams of pure alcohol, which is found in:
- 12 ounces of regular beer, which is usually about 5 percent alcohol.
- 5 ounces of wine, which is typically about 12 percent alcohol.
- 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits, which is about 40 percent alcohol.
