Outdoor classroom started at Southport school
In a new program this year, Southport Central School started Forest Fridays for its Pre-K and Kindergarten class, where students and staff go outside no matter the weather. The development of an outdoor classroom is being done in the woods behind the school playground. In this “classroom," the kids can be loud, get wet, climb trees and play in the dirt.
Friday, Oct. 14 was our first time spending our entire afternoon in the woods, the kids looked for bugs, made mud pies, climbed trees, explored different types of moss and made spruce tree tea. Tracey Hall, who is a parent and education coordinator for the Boothbay Region Land Trust, is graciously joining the group each week to share her knowledge and love of nature with the students.
The staff is excited for this new adventure and thankful to be in community that supports its kids!
