Spaghetti dinner to thank Boothbay region lobstermen
On Sept. 22, veterans from all over the state were honored by the Boothbay region lobstermen by hosting the veterans aboard their boats and sharing with them the time honored stories of the life of a lobstermen. They cruised the harbor, hoisted traps, and just enjoyed the time spent together. And, thanks to George McEvoy and John Fish, some enjoyed the harbor from the decks of the Nellie G and the Pink Lady II.
The Charles E Sherman Jr., Post 36 in Boothbay, is thanking our lobstermen by hosting a spaghetti dinner at the Legion Hall at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15. There will be two speakers at the dinner, Palmer Payne, a Korean War veteran, no stranger to the Boothbay region. Palmer will share with us a letter that he recently uncovered from a young World War II veteran who survived the Bataan Death March and Japanese prison camps. And, another one of our own, George Whitten, a WWII Army combat engineer and a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge, will talk about his experience building the bridges that greatly assisted the allies’ success. Winston Churchill, addressing the House of Commons following the Battle of the Bulge said, "This is undoubtedly the greatest American battle of the war and will, I believe, be regarded as an ever-famous American victory." However, it was also the largest and bloodiest battle fought by the United States in World War II. Hear George’s story as a young private leading the efforts to build critical bridges. George also recently visited the War Memorials in Washington, D.C. with the Maine Honor Flight. He will share that experience with us as well.
The dinner is free to all lobstermen and their guests; a donation of $8 for all others is requested. The evening will start at 5:30 with a social hour, beer, wine, and light munchies, followed by spaghetti and meatballs, salad and bread, with blueberry cake and ice cream for desert.
Please make a reservation by calling the post at 633-4487, leave your name and the name of your guest, or emailing David Patch at dapatch@roadrunner.com.
