Disposal district compactor repair begins Sept. 28
Beginning Sept. 28, the Boothbay region’s transfer station will look a little different. The compactor room repairs will begin with the removal of the No. 2 unit: the inside one. This is the first step in repairing the two 30-year-old compactor units for the first time in 15 years.
The No. 2 compactor will be dormant for five or six days while The Valley Company of Whitefield relines the room’s chutes and replaces the metal rods. Valley will then begin work on the No. 1 unit.
The transfer station will use dumpsters to serve as depositories while the compactors are repaired, according to Boothbay Region Refuse Disposal District operations manager Steve Lewis. He explained to the trustees Sept. 10 about the facility’s plans during the three week repair project.
During the repairs, employees will direct traffic to lessen the public’s confusion about where to dispose of their refuse. The district is also resurfacing the compactor room’s concrete floors. N.A. Reny is removing the old floors for $5,000, according to Lewis.
A new concrete floor will be installed. The district contracted with McClintick Foundations of Nobleboro for $20,000 to lay the new floor.
Late September seemed to be the best time to initiate the repairs, according to Lewis.
“We had a busy summer so we’re hoping by Sept. 28 it will be less chaotic when the repairs are being done,” he said.
In other business, the trustees approved transferring $5,000 from the operations into the health care account. Lewis reported the health care account has dwindled since the last deposit 18 months ago. The account was established in April 2014 when the district changed insurance plans. The new plan saves the district approximately $70,000, according to Lewis.
“We haven’t added to the fund since the original deposit. We’ve spent about $5,600 since then,” Lewis said. “So I’d like to replenish the health savings account with $5,000 from operations.”
The trustees also welcomed new member Kurt Crosby of Edgecomb. This was his first meeting. The Edgecomb selectmen nominated him this summer to serve as a trustee for a three-year term.
The trustees will meet next at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, at the transfer station’s business office in Boothbay.
