This letter is in response to the Feb. 12 article, "Maine CDC cites local inn for open sewage."

I believe the article concerning the "open drum for sewage" is a little misleading, suggesting that this was an overboard discharge system as opposed to a pump station. The article mentions the pipes that discharge sewage into the barrel, but does not mention the pump that pumps the sewage into the town sewer system.

It may help to know what a pump station is. It is a container that houses a pump that pumps the sewage into the town sewer system. The difference between the current system and the one we will replace it with is that the new one will be self-contained (water tight). It will perform the same duty.

I would also like to share comments from one of the letters that was addressed to Cap'n Fish's:

"I hope this finds you well and you are having a good winter." This was a friendly and informative letter from Chris Higgins, superintendent of the Boothbay Harbor Sewer District. He explained that his station must be replaced with one that meets code and is water tight.

I spoke with Mr. Higgins and Code Enforcement Officer Mr. Geoff Smith regarding the replacement of the current station. They were both very helpful. We have every intention of replacing the pump station with one that meets code in order to protect the cherished waters of Boothbay Harbor. We expect that, with the help of knowledgeable professionals, this will be done expeditiously as possible.
