‘Lessons and Carols’ is a great success
On Sunday, the Southport United Methodist Church Choir, under the direction of Mary Miller, presented its annual Lessons and Carols service. The evening began at 5 p.m. with an array of soups, breads, and desserts and concluded with the formal concert in the beautifully decorated sanctuary.
The choir offers this every year as a gift to the community. There is no charge for the event, however, a good will offering is accepted and given to a local charity. This year, the proceeds are going to the community fuel fund.
To make this a true community effort, readers from community churches present the lessons, women from the parish help in the kitchen, choir members (and others) prepare soups, bread and desserts. Pastor Ami Sawtelle and Linda Murray gave the bidding prayer and benediction. Again, Dominic Garvey played piano while people were gathering and played the organ for hymns and the Alleluia Chorus.
Every year, there are a few extra choir members for the performance, rounding out the sound for the anthems which included: "Mary’s Magnificat," "The Coventry Carol," "A Star," "We Three Kings" and more. The choir wishes to thank all those that attended, and all those who helped make this event possible.
