Boothbay Treasures: Business services and libraries
This is the fourth of a series of articles on Boothbay Treasures, a group of 26 local nonprofits from the Boothbay region who are collaborating to let the world know that they live, work, and serve in one of the most caring places on Earth, on #GivingTuesday, a national holiday for philanthropic giving set for December 2, 2014.
This week we share with you the good works of the business services and libraries in our region.
The Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library was established in 1924 and today provides multiple opportunities for people of all ages to have access to written, visual, audio and electronic resources in a welcoming, learning environment. With help from their staff of four, and thirty volunteers, the library features current materials in a variety of formats for persons of all ages. The library provides timely, accurate and useful information for community residents in their pursuit of job-related and personal interests. The library encourages young people to develop an interest in reading and learning through its offered services. The library also supports a wide variety of cultural and informational activities. Since 1962, the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce has been a 501(c)(6) voluntary membership organization that serves Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, East Boothbay, Edgecomb, Monhegan, Newcastle, Southport, Westport, Woolwich and Wiscasset. Their mission is to promote a positive business climate by focusing on advocacy, access and leadership. Over 130 volunteers and staff of four accomplish this mission through activities such as: annually producing the Boothbay Harbor Region Visitor & Resource Guide, distributing downtown and regional maps, offering co-op marketing advertising campaigns to businesses, promoting regional events and maintaining two Visitor Centers. Find out more at www.boothbayharbor.com.
The Friends of the Library has been operating since 1961 without a staff. They carry out their mission to foster support and promote the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library with over 50 volunteers by selling donated, used books. They are always looking for more volunteers to assist in running the store counter. Learn more at http://www.bmpl.lib.me.us/about-the-library/services-a-programs/used-bookstore.html.
In 1994 The Institute for Family-Owned Business began as a nonprofit committed to supporting, strengthening and empowering family-owned businesses throughout the state of Maine. The Institute serves family business owners, executives and employees through a wide range of continuing education programs, networking opportunities and consulting services. They also offer annual awards at a gala each May to recognize outstanding family businesses throughout the state and offer networking opportunities to attendees. The Southport Memorial Library Aides have been working to support the Southport Memorial Library through fundraising, as well as assisting the librarians with any necessary work since 1928. There are approximately 30 library aides who plan special projects such as book fairs, bakes sales and other activities to generate income for the library. They also assist the library by working at the front desk, preparing new acquisitions for circulation, assisting with the Artist of the Month project and light cleaning.
