Bath Antique Show begins 26th year
It may be hard to imagine glass or plastics from the 1960s as being antique, but the definition of what is actually “antique” is constantly changing, according to Paul Fuller, the organizer of the Bath Antique Show and Sale, which begins its 26th season on Sunday, Nov. 9 with Recycling Retro as its featured dealer.
Katherine and Erik Missal have been fixtures at the Montsweag Flea Market in Woolwich for 15 years. They specialize in mid-century modern, household items from the 1950s and 1960s. Kathleen said she is attracted to the bright primary colors and the space age design of such things as kitchenware and lighting fixtures. Straight off the set of “Mad Men,” this is the everyday stuff Baby Boomers grew up with.
“It’s your mom’s and grandma’s kitchen,” Katherine said, holding up a crimson dinner plate. “People make a connection with it because it is part of their heritage.”
Inside her stall at Montsweag, she likes to watch people’s reaction to what is familiar but not necessarily in their focus.
“They remember this stuff. A man came in last summer, saw this Pyrex bowl and said, 'I have to have this.’ This is a collectible that you can use.”
The Missals have photos of their wares at their website: www.recyclingretro.com or you can check them out at Facebook.com/recyclingretro. Katherine will also be happy to appraise any mid-century items brought to the show.
The first show of the season will feature Recycling Retro and 53 other dealers, with everything from early 19th century to Kathleen and Erik’s mid-century modern.
The show is at the Bath Middle School at 9 Old Brunswick Road in Bath. The show is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Exit U.S. 1 at Congress Avenue and follow the posted signs. Admission is $4, or $3.50 with the show’s display ad, found elsewhere in this publication. There is a café on the premises, serving delicious home made fare, at reasonable prices, and comfortable seating is provided.
