Boothbay's 250th celebration will include many events on the Common
As pieces of Boothbay's 250th birthday celebration fall into place, event chairman Dawn Gilbert said Monday that some of the events on the Boothbay Common August 22, 23 and 24 have been solidified.
"We'll have music on both Friday and Saturday," said Gilbert. Committee member Ralph Smith said that the band, Rustic Overtones, will perform on the Common on Saturday night from 8 to 9 p.m. before its performance at McSeagull’s from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Smith said Tuesday he is working on securing more music for Friday night from 7 to 8 p.m. Gilbert said that local entertainer Dave Gagne has also agreed to perform on Friday night.
Gilbert said children's activities, such as face painting and games, will be held on Saturday on the Common. Miniature horses will be on display and Gilbert is trying to secure a Native American group to provide some craft demonstrations and/or dances.
Friday night on the Common will include seafood dishes, a tent for adult beverages (from Boothbay Craft Brewery) from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday's food will be wood-fired pizza from Crust, a lunch wagon provided by Mary Lewis and ice cream from the Ice Cream Hut.
The event schedule will include a haunted cemetery walk provided by Sally Lobkowicz on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m.; a Boothbay Region Land Trust hike led by Rupe Neily will be held on Sunday; and a church service on the Common on Sunday at 6 p.m. provided by the Barters Island Baptist Church.
The committee is meeting on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. at the Boothbay Town Office during the next two weeks to finalize the schedule.
Street parade and fireworks
Groups wishing to enter a float in the street parade, at no cost, on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 11 a.m. may pick up an application at the following locations: Boothbay Town Office, Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce, Boothbay Information Center, Heads of the Harbor beauty salon and Hawke Motors.
Donations to the fireworks fund should be left at the Boothbay Town Office or mailed to the Boothbay Civic Association, P.O. Box 81, Boothbay, ME 04537.
"The donation checks should be made out to the Boothbay Civic Association and the memo line should be labeled 'fireworks’,” said Tom Nickerson, who is heading up the fireworks fundraising. "Because the BCA is a nonprofit, people can claim the donation on their tax forms."
Gilbert said the fireworks display will be fired from a barge in the Damariscotta River in East Boothbay and that buses will be utilized to bring people to the village. Gilbert said the YMCA has donated the use of two of its buses and parking will be available at Boothbay Region High School and at the YMCA.
"We will also set aside 150 seats for veterans at Ocean Point Marina for the Navy band concert and fireworks," said Gilbert.
