'The Last of the Doughboys' lecture July 13
In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I, author Richard Rubin will discuss his book, "The Last of the Doughboys," and his decade long search to find and interview the last surviving American veterans of that war. The lecture will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 13 in the Nickels-Sortwell House barn.
Richard Rubin will tell the remarkable and moving stories of these “doughboys,” as American soldiers were called, many of whom had never before told the story of their service. The Great War, as it was called by those who lived through it, changed the world. Yet somehow, the memories have grown dim while the lessons of that conflict still reverberate around the globe today.
Coming from big cities and small towns all over the country, most of whom had never been further than a few miles from home, Rubin said American World War I veterans were “19th century men and women living in the 21st century: self-reliant, humble and stoic; never complaining, still marveling at the immensity of the war they helped win.”
Nickels-Sortwell House is located at 121 Main Street in Wiscasset. The barn entrance is on Federal Street. Admission is $5 for Historic New England members. $10 for non-members. Pre-registration is recommended. Please call 207-882-7169 to reserve your seat. The Historic New England Wiscasset Summer lecture series is sponsored by Ames True Value Hardware & Supply.
